Chapter 34
What a ridiculous name for an article or blog, right? Most of the ways of how we think about things in this world is ridiculous, so to have this type of title fits perfectly for today’s subject. Our world is filled with people that make assumptions and judgements towards others and different things about those people. While most may be fair or accurate, a huge portion of the way we think is irrational and emotionally charged along with social inadequacies to see beyond one’s own misconceptions. I say this because I have given a name to this proverb I heard from an anonymous source.. so does that mean I get the credit? It would be nice to say that I originally thought of today’s topic, but I must give credit to those who came before for the conception. I would like to take the credit for bringing it to light as a conversation point. Has anyone heard of the anonymous proverb talking about your self worth described as the cost of the water bottle? Well, today is your day.
Our story begins with understanding human nature and our own self identification within the measure of our impact in what we do in this world – our jobs, family, friends, encounters with strangers, or our general worldly presence. At some point, we all do a self reflection of our purpose and what we are doing with our lives. Some may not realize their own self value and this is a travesty because we all have worth. We need to take a moment and realize we have all been beautifully created to help this world somehow, and the moment we see this, makes the world a better place for all of mankind. In this case, I am aiming at the lost or misunderstood for those that doubt themselves because you need to hear a story of something so general but yet specific, it makes you realize how special you truly are. We all need to be reminded sometimes, and even when we are strong individuals, it is valuable to hear how important you are. It helps us continue to grow and move forward, and for some, it’s life fuel that keeps your tank full pushing your forward into not giving up.
I was talking with my wife the other day, and just like millions of other people, we love sharing Instagram memes and Titktok posts, but one of them spawned a conversation about those that feel like they are lost in life, or that they are down the wrong path, need redirection, or confirmation that they matter. I know this is a deep intrinsic identification, but psychology research shows that those that are searching for a meaningful connection of the world tend to reach out to social media in initial stages to relieve their internal desire to meet that demand of personal discovery and their missing relational capacities. Many psychologists can have a field day with this, but here we start talking about how the bottle of water (represents the human individual) in many different environments that take on many different values.
For example, at a kids soccer game, the water bottle is usually donated or given up to a kid that ends up throwing it around and tends to drink a sip then discards it with no regard or leaves it half drunk for the trash man to just throw it away. Yikes! The kid did not pay for it, and considered it something arbitrary or worthless. Do any of you see that in your lives? Where you feel like others throw you around unappreciative of the contributions you make?
In the next phase of a water bottle life, a parent needs water and pays the snack bar a dollar for a water bottle. In this case, the waters were given as a donation for no other reason than a quick buck, while the snack bar tries to just grab any domination from it for quick cash. Makes you rethink how you think of water, right? Poor water… like that bottle has feelings, right? The worth of the water bottle is dismissed and it’s true value is not taken into account or even noticed. The trash man just picks up the bottles as they are discarded through the park. In your life, do you feel like the money you make doesn’t meet the value you provide only to have it dismissed or disregarded?
Within the next stage, you are out and about and are pretty thirsty because your thermoflask ran out, and there isn’t a water fountain around. At the store, that water’s cost is 1.99, almost double of what it was at the sports game. You have zero problem buying it because you are thirsty and need to replenish your thermoflask to stay hydrated. You don’t want to run out of liquid before you get home later. It would be inconvenient not to buy because you may have to stop at another place to grab if you didn’t do it now. The demand and need has gone up! Out of a convenience measure, the individual is willing to spend almost two dollars to save them time and effort later.
Flash forward. What if I told you there is a place where that same bottle of water that was thrown around the soccer field, bought at a snack bar undervalued, picked up at the local store for convenience, was now bought out of necessity for almost $7 dollars a bottle? In this scenario, it literally is almost liquid Gold, and people purchasing have zero problems opening their wallets and pocketbooks because they NEED it to survive their life over the next period of time of their life. This psychological phenomena is what I call Airport Water, because people don’t want to get caught without something to drink – the life fluid that gets them through their demands and struggles. They feel it is so important to make the purchase, they don’t even blink at the price. The price is seven times more costly than the first offering and even more immensely valuable than what was given away at other places. Why is this?
Now what if that water bottle represented you?
Why is it that you allow yourself to be in a situation, environment, relationship, or job that diminishes or doesn’t realize your value? It sounds crazy that we even make this comparison, but you may be allowing yourself to live your life similar to the comparison of the water bottle. You should not be okay with this type of social status if you are being undervalued. You need to find a place or be with people who are willing to pay the $7 dollar fee (or more!) for water because they want and need you so intensely in their life. They are willing to pay whatever the cost is because you hold an immense value to their well being. Why can’t we realize that we are all this special? Why can’t we see ourselves in the light of the tale of the airport water presents? Where you are at now, may not be where you need to be, and that you need to find a way to get to the airport. Getting to the airport may take some time, but the ride along the way is finding out why we are so special to this world.
Today I implore you to take stock in yourself and figure out whether or not you are being thrown around and discarded by those around you. Look into how your contributions are being measured in your environment and sphere of influence. If you are putting in the work, and making all the necessary moves to be successful and for some reason, you are being diminished, it may be time to sell or offer your services to a different crowd that sees your contributions. You do not have to settle. It is perfectly okay to want more out of your life, live and create strong connections with others that share your goals, aspirations, and those that align with your principles. It is okay to step away from going one way, change directions, and find pathway to get where you need to get going. It takes a strong person to make these moves and put yourself out there, and I know each and every one of you are capable, because you are strong and powerful. That is why you have so much worth, and it’s finally time for others to see that – to realize that. So the next time you are out and about and see a water bottle, use this little story to remind yourself how incredible you are. Just like how water is the lifeblood and needed to survive, so are you because of who you are to this world and gifts you bring.
