2.1 Million Served: Using Social Media To Inspire

Academic Series: Work #1

Every few months, I run my own digital checkup.  It’s basically a digital consumer report to make sure all of my platforms check out and are in good standing and healthy.  That includes a personal search and an analysis of all the analytics that companies put out about your influence and imprints, engagement activity, and other similar things.  This year has been a crazy year – finishing induction, new leadership roles within my job, finishing up my Masters Degree, coaching, and family duties.  It has been to say the least a little cray cray.  As the academic year has wound down, every influencer always wants to be relevant, but my relevancy in my eyes is different because my needs are to serve those I am trying to reach to help them make more of themselves, believe in their talents, and other uplifting affirmations I can use to help them move forward in healthy way.  With that said, my Instagram presence has blossomed over the past three years to over 120,000 followers.  My other platforms have grown as well but in different ways such as activity, visits, and views.  Enter TikTok.  Years ago, I had secured my handle for an account because I never wanted anyone to take the Coach Hulme moniker, but I never used it.  One day at my new school, my principal told me I needed to inject some energy into our rally and asked me to come up and dance in front of the school.  Yep…it happened.  All of a sudden I was no longer the new unknown teacher, but the “cool” teacher everyone wanted to know.

I understood what this meant because I saw my video hit TikTok on various different accounts, and students were always excited to see me.  I knew I needed to use the account and start posting.  I envisioned it as a means to reach different people in a more light hearted positive perspective, having fun with life but still being a person that brought a vision of responsibility and leadership.  I think I nailed the mark because my account engagement went through the roof.  TikTok is designed differently than other sites, not much is made of followers as much as views, so in a year or so, I haven’t really gained more than 500 followers, but my videos really move in clicks.  I found that I could reach people in a different rather than a direct video on my other sites in which I talk about what to do and how to do in life, to a goofy way to inspire people to make the most of every moment they are given on this earth.  In my discovery this week, my account has exploded to more than 2.1 million views this past year, not necessarily on one video but over an accumulation of all the videos.  I am fine with that.  To be honest, I was in utter shock to see the stat, and it made me think about all the moments I had a direct responsibility to connect and help people. Before I even post any video, it goes through my own review for appropriateness and impact.  Sometimes it hits and sometimes it thuds, but I always believe there is someone out in the world that is better, or lifted because I posted.

Enter the inner workings behind my methodology: backed my research and care.  Since I am an educator, there is a lot of information that we are trained with or exposed to that leads to implications of education: social-behavioral, psychological, and post pandemic ideologies and theories.  I feel like a lot of the ways we try to work with people is due to our experiences, but some do get the privilege of enhanced learning or research using it in their applications with others.  I feel I get that unique opportunity, and when you mix that with my personality that everyone has come to know, amazing things are happening.  With this in mind, I feel inspired to actually self publish some of my research that I feel is valuable for others to refer to when they are considering leadership and relationships.  This year has also been a launching point where I have had other graduate students and professors approach me about previous works and considerations from here on CoachHulme.com, when again, like I have said before, I felt I was just writing my thoughts into a dark abyss, but quite the opposite.  I feel honored and humbled, and I appreciate the acknowledgement, but I really do hope anything I put out into this universe is something that inspires others to move themselves into a position to achieve great things.

In the coming days and weeks, I will add to this new category of posts “Academic Series” different works, abstracts, research, and my own theories to how we can make not only education more purposeful and useful, but something we could use in our daily lives for beneficial purposes.  Thank you for allowing me to help, even though I am imperfect and probably am someone just like you who has been brave enough and decided to actually write it out and post it, rather than keep it inside myself and let it die there for nobody to be able to use.  I hope it helps.  You are all capable of the same things in your life and even more.  Let this be your inspiration piece for the day: just take the leap and go for it.  This life is too short to care about what others think about you.  Usually when you take calculated chances to do something special, something special comes out of you.  In relevance, I don’t look at the 2 plus million interactions with my account as a trophy or an award, I look at it as a reminder that I have earned someone’s trust and that I need to remember how important it is to help and serve the people who are listening, and attempt to reach those that aren’t.  I may not always have the same opinion as the masses, but maybe my opinion helps for a deeper, more robust conversation in relation to anything being considered.  Having the ability to discern and reason because there are multiple angles to address things, that is where the work is being successful.  I can’t wait to continue this journey with you discovering all the wonderful things that life has planned.  Let’s get going…
