Chapter 14
When I was little kid, it seemed like the days were forever and the sunsets even longer. The golden hue of the setting sun as I played in our front yard brought warmth to my heart. I had everything I needed. A good home, a good family, and the moment.
It seems like those moments dwindled as I got older. The moments turned into blinks that flashed by into now distant memories. As a grown man, the days are shorter than a ever and are now weeks, months, and even years in the past. Our lives move at the speed of light… which is funny considering those sunsets were so beautifully filled with light that never seem to end the day.
Our lives are full of things we need to do, things to accomplish, plans for tomorrow. What if there was no tomorrow? Only today? Would your perspective change? Would things that you do change? Would you sleep in? Would you spend hours on your phone? Would you take a moment to talk to your kid? Would things be different? Everyone has a different story, but we all have the same constant which is time. Some of us have less than others. I believe we are gifted specific time and it is duty to use it in the way that God intended us to.
In Psalms 90:12, it is said “Teach us to count carefully the days of our short lives. Then we will be wise in how we live.” as I have gotten older, I have become more aware that this gift is so precious. I am now a parent, you would think my kids are little cute babies, but time has buzzed by and they are almost teenagers. I can’t even believe where my life has gone. Have I been a good dad? Have I been a good husband? Have I been good son? These are questions that when you are younger are different… you think, “I can’t wait to be a good husband! I can’t wait to be a dad! I hope I make my parents proud!” They are all future tense type of thoughts, but the future comes way to quick and passes. Now those are past tense thoughts.
When you look back, you hope you did everything right and made the biggest impact with your life. It really brings us back to the passage above. If we are to understand that each moment is glorious and significant, why would we waste any second? Why would we long for the future when what really matters is right in front of us? If you have kids, then taking that moment of your time to brighten their day doesn’t seem so insignificant anymore now does it??? What if you lived your everyday significantly, would it matter how long long you lived your life? If tomorrow never came, but your today was the way God intended it too be for you, then would it be any less special?
I believe we all want long and prosperous lives, but in order to do that, we have to take into account what we spent our time everyday on. What is going to make the difference? Being a kind friend. Being a loving and caring husband and father. Being a honest person. Giving to others. Inspiring people to live their fullest. I believe these concepts are intertwined into every decision we make in our complex lives.
When I was a little kid, I loved watching “Rocky 3”. For dramatic effect, Apollo Creed got so upset at Rocky Balboa and yells at him, “Come on Rock… THERE IS NO TOMORROW.” I never understood then, but as time has passed (and my Dad saying it to me a million times), I have really embraced its meaning. Now is when you start to make the changes needed. Now is when the difference is made. Now is when you do the things you need to do. You have now. You have this moment. You are in it, and it is your choice to commit to doing what you need to do. Whether it is accomplishing something important for your life, or whether it is giving something important to someone else’s life, your now is what matters most. You need to do it. It will make a difference one way or the other what you do with your now.
In all transparency, the world is not going to end. But I really challenge all of you to take a look at your life and what it means, because for some of us, “There is no tomorrow.”
