Normal Operating Hours.

Chapter 12

As I sit here about to dive into my fifth different educational paper this week, I take a look back at my day day. Whew!!! I don’t know what yours looked like, but mine is not over. We are not closed for business here yet, so to speak. Not because I am cramming or because I am late turning something in or because I am behind, it is because I am still “burning the wick” trying to get ahead of the game.

“Failure lurks within the shadows of complacency.” Yep… I made that one up. You heard it here first folks. I believe if we are complacent and staying in one spot, we are not moving forward. If we aren’t moving forward, then we stagnate our growth and that is not a good thing. Of course, I am not talking about the need for rest and relaxation, but I am talking about a hint of drive, initiative, and sacrifice. These occur outside the “Normal Operating Hours”, because normal is what everyone else does.

It is okay to be normal. But God did not design us to be normal. He designed us as a gift to the world. There are some in the world that are satisfied with “going with the flow”. Then there are some who exceptionally use their gifts. These are the people that will never give up when obstacles present themselves. These are the people that realize the world will continue to move, grow, and adapt as the future comes near. These are the people who are destined for greatness because they understand this fact and pursue exceptionalism by using those gifts God gave them. Finding these gifts may take time and effort. Success does not come over night and generally does not present itself until multiple mistakes and stumbles have occurred. It takes a lot of time. We only have 24 hours in a day, and some just use their time better than others.

The other day, I heard Elon Musk speak. He was asked why he was so successful. His response was “I was nearly bankrupt and was in the worse financial position of my life. I had these ideas that I never gave up on, and luckily it all worked out.” The reporter told him to stop playing coy and give the real answer. That’s when Elon Musk said, “Okay, you want the truth… it was the day that I realized that I would rather work 18 hours a day for myself doing something that brings me joy and I am invested into, rather than working an 8 hour shift to help someone else get rich.”

If that wasn’t an ultimate “mic drop”, then I don’t know what was.

This statement brings up a relevant point. We all work jobs, earn money, and go through the normal motions of everyday life. But what happens to that life when you actually care and pour into the things that will lead you towards success? You have a direct effect on your potential success and it starts when you begin to invest in yourself… at least this is my interpretation of his answer. This concept is worth exploring… in a previous blog we talked about how embracing your magnificence and trying your best will allow you to model behavior to inspire others. I am now talking about how this pursuit can lead you to greater things where you can pour over into helping others if you get yourself to a position where success follows you.

Using your struggles, your efforts, and the story that your life represents to bring success into this world will not only benefit you, but show others that success is not just for the lucky, privileged, and entitled, but belongs to all who willing to seek it through sacrifice and persistence. Personally, I want to go somewhere in life and do great things for others, but I know that requires me to stay open and commit to the work outside “Normal Business Hours.”
